ATM Switching

ATM Switching

Once a connection has been set up, switches act like telephone switches, except input or output ports are not reserved between cells. A switch doesn’t store cells before forwarding them; the delay is only a few bits long (the path bits):

The switch algorithm is: use the input port and path id to look up the table, change the path id, and forward on the given output port.
