UNIT 1: Multi Disciplinary Nature of Environmental Studies

The multidisciplinary nature of environmental studies: Definition, Scope and importance. Need for public awareness (01 Lecture)

What is the objective of EVS study?

The study of EVS provides student with information on environment which will bring awareness and in turn shall develop a concern for his or her own environment.

What do we teach/discuss in EVS subject?

EVS is integration of several subjects that include both science and social studies. In order to understand different aspects of environment, we need to discuss physics, chemistry, biology, geography, resource management, economics and population issues.

Choose the best answer:

The ultimate objective of the environment study is

(a) To know more information about environment

(b) To bring more awareness

(c) To create a concern for environment

(d) To begin to act at in a small way to protect the environment at our own level.

The environment study comprises of

(a) Physics, Chemistry & Biology of environment

(b) Health, Population growth & related issues

(c) Engineering & Resource Management

(d) Above all

Descriptive type Questions:

  1. Can you list the organizations in our country that are working towards environmental protection? Explain their contribution

2. List two major environmental problems that are of national significance, and another two that are of global significance. Briefly explain why you consider each to be a serious problem and explain possible relief.

Questions for Activity:

(The following list is only indicative. You may improve or modify the same by including various items that you consider appropriate)

Can you identify the origin of the following supplies

(a)Milk – nearby villages/ tabelas to dairy farm and then processed

(b)Plastics – Composition of different chemicals and mechanically processed ( Only certain types of plastics can be recycled)

(c)Paper – From forest wood & processed in the industry & also recycled paper

(d)Water – nearby reservoirs/tanks to treatment plant and then to people & the supply depends on seasonal rainfall.

(e) Petrol, diesel – From fossil fuel and its supply is limited.

(f) Electricity – From coal or nuclear power plants & they are limited in supply.

Questions for Activity: (Group Discussion)The teacher shall open the discussion by giving them some question on a selected theme and shall observe the student’s response.

Why are we faced with so many serious environmental problems today? Is it largely because of a lack of political will and leadership at different levels of government? or a growing population & rapid urbanization that consumes more resource and pollutes the environment as well? or A disregard for community welfare on the part of industry? or A lagging anti-pollution technology? or prevailing economic and legal structures that are environmentally unsound and unfriendly? Is there a root cause? You can discuss and justify your claim
